How Will the PS3 Make Money?

Wednesday, September 27th, 2006

Its an interesting question because the PS3 will cost Sony atleast $300 per console at launch due to the very expensive Blu-Ray drive, Cell Processor, and RSX GPU. In contrast Microsoft only lost $120 per console at launch on the Xbox 360. To cover the $120 cost Microsoft charged higher royalties which turned into a $10 increase in game prices. Sony will also charge $60 for their games, but that makes me wonder how Sony plans to make money.

Limewire Rocks

Monday, September 25th, 2006

Limewire has the biggest balls I’ve ever seen. After they get sued by the RIAA for everything illegal they do…

THEY COUNTERSUE! That’s right. Limewire has filed a countersuit in Arista v. Lime Wire saying that the RIAA is guilty of “antitrust violations, consumer fraud, and other misconduct”.

It’s Cloudy Inside

Thursday, September 21st, 2006

I changed the sidebar once again, this time changing the categories on the side to tags and displaying them in a “cloud view”. This means that tags that are used more often appear bigger and bolder, while tags that I use rarely are pale and tiny. This is done with a Wordpress plugin called “Ultimate Tag Warrior“. It seems to be the way the web is using, with more visualization and less raw data, and it looks pretty, so I added it. It may seem a bit harder to set up than it is, so don’t get scared. There are a lot of options I haven’t had the time to look through yet, but I’ll be playing with them later. It’s very elegant, yet very powerful. Highly recommended. Check it out for yourself and tell me what you think.

Evil DRM and Windows Media Player 11

Thursday, September 21st, 2006

On Microsoft’s website, they have a page for WMP 11’s release notes. One of the items on the notes says that you cannot backup any of your licenses (purchased music, movies, etc.) This scares the hell out of me. The reason for this move by Microsoft was to remove a tiny loophole where users could backup their data and rip it to another PC. But this evil move by Microsoft has prevented the masses from backing up their data. Another brilliant part of this is that you cannot make a burned music CD. So if you don’t have an iPod or a Zune, or any MP3 player, Microsoft is saying F U! Your legal usage of purchased music doesn’t matter! (more…)

No More Accidental Caps Lock!

Tuesday, September 19th, 2006

For Linux users, at least. I saw lots of posts about how people are switching their Caps Lock key with their left Control key to avoid accidentally pressing it and having aLL TEXT COME OUT LIKE THIS UNTIL THEY NOTICE IT. Let’s face it, Caps Lock is the worst positioned key on the keyboard
Unfortunately, this solution was not doing it for me. The button says “Ctrl”, not “Caps”

What Wii Did Right

Tuesday, September 19th, 2006

Despite my displeasure with many of the recent Wii announcements, Nintendo actually did some things right too. (Shocking isn’t it?) First, the price for the Classic Controller is great. At $20 it fits right in to the pricing scheme, too bad the Nunchuk didn’t get the memo. Also the many Wii channels are a great idea. Things like the Wii weather channel that shows you your local weather, the Mii channel which allows you to make an avatar of yourself, and the picture channel, which allows you to upload and edit your pictures. Angry About Wii

Monday, September 18th, 2006

After the Nintendo announcement Wednesday and Thursday about the Wii, I was in a state of shock. I couldn’t believe that Nintendo would charge $250 for a glorified Xbox with an amazing controller. Something interesting that I found was that the Wii was only $220 or 25,000 yen in Japan. This is interesting because the only difference between the North American version and the Japanese version of the Wii is the bundled game. (Wii Sports here, and a compellation of mini games in Japan) So that means that there is a $30 premium for North America. I can think of no good reason for a $30 premium. (more…)

Wii Japan Conference

Wednesday, September 13th, 2006

The first of 3 Nintendo Wii conferences to be held today, tomorrow and Friday has begun. You can read more about the conference times here. The conference should tell the world what the price is, when the Wii will be released, the bundle, and any new features added in the last 4 months since E3 2006. There will be more posts as the news breaks. Here’s hoping for an October launch with a price point of $229 with 2 controllers, Wii Sports, and a classic controller.
-Nate

Update: Apparently there has been false information floating around the internet news sites regarding the Japan conference’s time. The false info said that the conference would be at 8 p.m. EST, but really it is at 1 a.m. EST.

Update 2: Gamespot has reported here that the NY Times has an article about the Wii. In the article, it says a November 19 launch and a $250 price point. The Wii bundle includes Wii Sports, no word on the number/type of controllers.

Wii Online

Tuesday, September 12th, 2006

So I was reading IGN’s interview with Jason Armenise, and this was said:

IGN Wii: Great. Any chance we’re going to see an online mode for the game this year or is that pretty much out?

Jason Armenise: You know, we really haven’t talked about online too much. At this point, we’re not talking about it.

Jason Armenise: Is it something that has been ruled out - can you say that?

Jason Armenise: I think for now I’m not going to discuss it. Anything that has to do with online, for now no comment.

Apple News

Tuesday, September 12th, 2006

Today, Apple announced their new iPods, iTunes services, and something called iTV at a press conference in San Francisco. Now availible for download on iTunes are full length movies and TV shows in 640×480 resolution (also known 480p). This is a large improvement over the previous video resolutions. Also, in the iTunes movie store are shorts (not clothes). I think that the inclusion of short movies can revitalize that segment of the movie industry. The only short movies that I have seen before a full length movie are Pixar’s animated short films, but with a new medium for short films we might see more before feature films in a theater.
