My Tech Woes Continue

Tuesday, August 29th, 2006

I have had little luck in the past few days regarding anything technological. My laptop (where I do almost everything from) had a massive hard drive failure. My mom was yelling at me for something, I glanced at the lappy, she got even more pissed, slammed the screen, and a head broke off the hard drive. I was able to use my trusty Knoppix Live CD (required material for any household) to recover a bit of what I needed, as I had not done too many backups recently. I am shipping a new hard drive from New Egg (does anyone else remember when they had a retail store that went under the name Egghead Software? I do), which hopefully will be here soon, because the lappy is gaining dust quickly.

“We Apologise For the Inconvenience”

Sunday, August 27th, 2006

I’ve been quite busy lately and had too many tech problems to deal with, so I haven’t posted in a while. More on all that later, but with that, combined with school starting last Monday (along with a They Might Be Giants concert), I haven’t had almost any free time. I should have everything back up and running early next week and be back to posting as often as possible as soon as possible.

Snakes on a Defective By Design Action Day

Saturday, August 19th, 2006

So yesterday at midnight, I finally got to see Snakes on a Plane. I’m not going to post much about it, because there is just so much that others have posted about the movie so far. Basically, I wanted to love the movie, but expected it to be bad. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was one of the most kickass movies I have ever seen. Highly recommended. 9.5/10 stars.

Also, today was the DefectiveByDesign.org action day, where the contact numbers to people working at the MPAA were posted.

Woot Off!!!

Thursday, August 17th, 2006

It’s a WOOT OFF!!! That’s right boys and girls, for the next undisclosed period of time, you can buy some random item at a very low price! I have already bought 2 512MB sticks or RAM (with multicolor LED’s) today for $40 each. I have to be up at 6AM, it’s 2AM, and I am still planning on staying up to see what comes next. Last time on the woot off I bought 2 Razer Pro Lazer mice (one for a friend, who paid me back) and an MP3 player for my brother. The last item was an air freshener (2 pack) and the next item is going to be something completely shitty that we all buy anyways, just to see that little bar drain.

Anyways, I got that Fenwick At It’s Best thing tomorrow morning, so I’m going to miss a huge chunk of the woot off, along with going to see…

MOTHERFUCKING SNAKES ON A PLANE!

That’s right, at 12:00, I’m seeing Sam Jackson kick the shit out of those fucking snakes. More on that later, but basically I have been looking forward to this movie for about a year now (got the t-shirt, wristband, and poster in front of me) and it all comes down to tomorrow. Will it suck? WHO CARES!?! It’s Samuel L. Fucking Jackson in a movie who’se whole plot is given away by the title. I can’t wait.

Defective By Design Action Day

Wednesday, August 16th, 2006

A few days ago, I posted about a site called DefectiveByDesign.org and how they were fighting DRM. I gave some vague statements about how we should all fight DRM and refuse to buy  infected products. Well, now’s the time to act. This Friday, DefectiveByDesign is going to post the contact numbers to  the MPAA for all registered users. So sign up and pick up your phones on Friday! I would go on, but there really isn’t much more to say, except to show those bastards who’s boss.

Why Cancelling E3 Isn’t a Bad Idea…

Sunday, August 13th, 2006

After the announcement that E3 was cancelled, I headed over to IGN to see their thoughts. The first response to the news by one of the editors was a simple “Hallelujah”. Most of the editors seemed to agree with the comment. IGN thinks that cancelling E3 is a good thing, and, frankly, so do I. Here’s why…

Defective By Design

Friday, August 11th, 2006

Those of you who have a keen eye may notice the small button on the sidebar pointing to a website called “Defective By Design“. This is an orginization dedicated to eliminating all that pesky DRM that may prevent you from doing such things with the music you lawfully purchased as burning the songs to a CD, playing them on your Creative Zen or iPod or other MP3 player, listening to the music too many times, giving a friend a copy to get him hooked on the band, so that he or she may also purchase their music, making a backup copy of your music on a second hard drive, cutting it up and either deleting or rearranging part of it, creating a mix with it and some other music, or one of many other DRM-disabled actions you may or may not wish to perform with your music.

Router Troubles and Internet Speed

Tuesday, August 1st, 2006

So the other day I was browsing YouTube and Google Video on the Mac Mini I have downstairs in our AV system. It’s hooked up wirelessly to the access point in the next room over. That has to be the slowest connection known to man. It took me about 15 minutes to download Numa Numa and about 10 to download the Star Wars Kid. That was completely unacceptable, especially for a machine whose sole purpose in life is to browse media.

So I decided to hard-wire it. (more…)
